Everyone has some junk in their home. However, there are some who have more than others. Having a lot of mess around often causes stress. If you are not decluttering your home, then you are also not taking care of yourself.

When Should You Declutter?

Many people consider clutter as one of those things that can consume energy. Plus, it often causes them to spend a lot of time trying to find things. In extreme cases, a life of consumption that goes beyond stuff can lead to depression and obesity. For hoarders, a home that is filled with clutter can cause health problems and fire hazards.

Anything that you are keeping in your house that does not add value to your life is considered as clutter. Decluttering involves making your home a place for things that matter to you.

Decluttering, for some people, help relieve stress because they feel a sense of accomplishment and control. For others, decluttering helps them get rid of junk and provides more available space. Whatever your reason is for decluttering, this guide can help you through the process.

How To Declutter Your Home

  1. Set Goals – make a plan before you start decluttering. It does not matter how many rooms you have at home or how much clutter you need to go through, beginning with certain goals will help you come up with a plan that will help reduce frustrations as you go through the process.
  2. Create a sorting system – when you go through the spaces and rooms in your home, you should have a system for sorting the things you find. Come up with your own method or use the three box method or other popular home organizing methods.
  3. Get rid of clutter – when disposing items, you can choose to recycle, donate or freecycle, have a garage sale, or rent a dumpster.

Other Important Decluttering Tips

If you are just like other people, you may have trouble disposing of things that you’ve spent a lot of money on, which you once loved or used. In most cases, it’s not just about the money but the memories and the sentimental value it holds. These are valid and real feelings that make it difficult to let go of your things.

You have a lot of options when it comes to decluttering your home. So, you don’t have to feel guilty. You should prepare yourself mentally and keep these few tips in mind.

  1. 80/20 rule – Let’s take your clothes for example. Generally speaking, you only wear 20% of the total clothes that you own in about 80% of the time. This also applies to other things you own like your books, shoes, bags, and etc. So, what you need to do is get rid of the things that you are not using 80% of the time.
  2. Get Past The Sunk Costs – sunk costs are the costs that you have incurred and can no longer recover. Most things in your house must be considered as sunk cost. Since you cannot get the value back that you spent, you need to consider the value it adds to your life. This will help you decide whether to keep the item or not.
  3. See if it works – anything that doesn’t work should be disposed. If you want to fix it then go ahead but don’t keep it if it’s no longer working.
  4. When did you last use it? – you should consider getting rid of the items that you have not used for the past 6 months.
  5. Find out which items you use – Keep what you use and get rid of those that you don’t need. Get rid of the items that you have not used for more than a year.
