When Your Bookshelves Are Saying, “ENOUGH!”
Do you love books? We do, too! But sometimes your bookshelves reach the point where there’s no room for one more book without starting a small home renovation project. π
If you’re ready to part with some books, don’t automatically put them in the trash. Your gently used books may have plenty of life left in them!
π Where Can You Donate Your Books?
π Local Libraries
Many libraries accept books for Friends of the Library sales or other fundraising efforts. Always check their current donation guidelines first.
β€οΈ Nonprofits & Charities
Local organizations may accept books for community programs, schools, shelters, or fundraising sales.
βͺ Churches & Community Groups
Many hold book sales throughout the year, with proceeds supporting programs in the community.
π¦ Little Free Libraries
Have just a few books to pass along? A neighborhood Little Free Library can be a wonderful way to put them directly into another reader’s hands.
πͺ Thrift Stores & Used Bookstores
Many accept novels, children's books, cookbooks, coffee-table books, and other gently used titles. Some specialty bookstores may also be interested in older, collectible, or hard-to-find books.
π« Schools & Daycares
Gently used children's books may help build classroom libraries and give young readers new stories to enjoy.
π΅ Senior Living Communities
Assisted-living and senior communities may appreciate books for their residents. Large-print books can be especially useful.
π Before You Donate…
Give the books a quick inspection. Avoid donating books that are moldy, stained, torn, heavily damaged, missing pages, or otherwise in poor condition. And check inside the pages! You might find an old photograph, important document, money, or that bookmark you thought was lost forever. π³
Some organizations may not accept outdated textbooks, old reference books, magazines, workbooks, or heavily worn books, so call ahead before loading up the car.
And if a book is too worn to donate but still has beautiful illustrations or interesting pages, consider crafting, repurposing, or recycling it.
